Your phone number is wrong on JustDial. Does it matter?

Somewhere out there, a directory has your old landline. Someone will call it this week, get nothing, and go to whoever answers.

NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone. The idea is simple: those three things should be identical everywhere your business appears online.

In India that means Google, JustDial, Sulekha, IndiaMART, Yellow Pages, your website, your Instagram bio, and any aggregator that scraped you years ago.

Two reasons it matters, and one is bigger

The obvious one. A customer finds your old number and calls it. Nobody answers. They call the next business. That is a lost sale, today, with no search-engine theory attached.

The search one. Consistent details across sources make it easier for a search engine to be confident the records describe one business. Inconsistent details make that harder. This is widely believed to matter and it is worth doing, but be suspicious of anyone who tells you exactly how much - nobody outside Google knows.

The first reason is enough on its own.

How the mess happens

You change your number. You update Google, because that is the one you think about. JustDial keeps the old one - you listed there in 2019 and forgot the login. An aggregator scraped JustDial and now has it too. Two years later there are five versions of you online and three are wrong.

Finding them

Search your business name with your city. Then search your old phone number in quotes - that finds listings you have forgotten, which are exactly the ones that are wrong.

Write down every listing you find and what it says.

Fixing them

Each directory has its own process, most involve claiming the listing, and some take weeks. It is dull, and it is worth an afternoon.

The details must match exactly. "Shop 12, Park Street" and "12 Park St" are the same place to you and two different strings to a machine.

Duplicates are worse than wrong

Two listings for you on one directory is worse than one listing with an old number. Reviews split between them, and neither looks established. Report the duplicate rather than editing both - and see how to find them.

Doing it without the afternoon

Sunaam finds where you are listed, compares each against your real details, and tells correct, needs-fixing, duplicate and missing apart - showing the wrong number it actually found, so it is a task rather than a verdict.

For directories with no API - which is most of the Indian ones - it fills in every field under that site's own labels and hands you the link. You click submit. That last click stays yours on purpose: submitting on your behalf means acting as your business somewhere we were not invited.
