Why competitors outrank you on Google Maps

You can see who is above you. You cannot see why. Here is what is worth checking, and what is guesswork dressed up as expertise.

Let us start with the uncomfortable part.

Nobody can tell you why a competitor outranks you. Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence. The exact weighting is not published, it changes, and it is not observable from outside. Anybody who tells you "they rank higher because of X" is guessing and charging you for it.

What you can do is compare what is visible, and act on the differences that are within your control.

What is actually observable

Distance. Often the whole answer. A business closer to the searcher has a structural advantage you cannot fix. This is why a single search from your desk tells you so little - check several points across your area instead.

Categories. What are they listed as? If four of the five above you use a more specific category and you use a broad one, that is worth a look - but only change yours if the specific one is genuinely accurate.

Review count and rating. Visible, comparable, and something you can move.

Photos. Count them. A profile with four photos and one with two hundred are presenting differently.

Completeness. Hours, description, services, attributes - filled in or not.

Consistency elsewhere. Their details matching across directories while yours disagree.

What is not observable

Their click-through rate. What Google knows about their prominence. Links. Behavioural signals. Whether they were affected by an update last month.

Do not let anyone sell you certainty about these.

The useful framing

Not "why do they beat me" - unanswerable. Instead:

"What do the businesses appearing near me commonly have that I do not?"

That is answerable, honest, and produces a to-do list. If six of the eight businesses in your area have a hundred-plus reviews and you have twelve, that is a real, visible gap you can close.

What Sunaam shows

The businesses that repeatedly appear where you want to be, and the observable differences - categories, review counts, ratings, photo counts.

The wording is deliberate: "businesses ranking near you typically have around 180 reviews; you have 40." Never "they outrank you because they have more reviews." The first is something we measured. The second is a claim about cause that we cannot support, and it would be the kind of confident nonsense this industry is full of.
