Why your category matters more than anything else on your profile

When someone searches "biryani near me", Google first looks for businesses whose category is about biryani. A biryani house listed as just "Restaurant" competes with every restaurant in the city; listed as "Biryani restaurant", it competes with the few that sell what the customer asked for. The right primary category is often the single biggest change a small business can make to show up on Google Maps.

How to choose

Pick the most specific category for what you mainly do as your primary. Then add the categories for the other things you really offer: a sweet shop that also bakes cakes adds "Bakery". Look at the businesses that show up above you for your main search and note their categories. Do not add categories for things you do not offer; it confuses customers and Google. Frequently asked questions

How many categories can my Google Business Profile have?

One primary category and up to nine additional ones. The primary category matters most: Google uses it to decide which searches you appear in, and it is the label shown under your name.

What should my primary category be?

The most specific category that describes what you mainly do. 'Biryani restaurant' beats 'Restaurant' for a biryani house, because it matches what people actually search for. If a customer would describe you in one phrase, the category closest to that phrase is your primary.

Can I add a category that is not in Google's list?

No. Google only accepts categories from its own list of about 4,000. This finder searches that list, so anything you find here can be added to your profile.

Does adding more categories help me rank?

Only when they are true. Extra categories let you appear for services you really offer; adding unrelated ones can make Google trust your profile less and confuse customers. Two to four accurate categories is typical for a small business.

How do I change my category on Google?

On Google Search or Maps, open your profile, choose Edit profile, then Business category. Change the primary, add the rest, and save. Google may review the change before it shows.

Is this category finder free?

Yes, free and with no sign-up. It searches a copy of Google's category list, so it is instant.
