Google Business Profile suspended? How to get it back

Suspensions are usually automatic, usually fixable, and usually made worse by what owners do in the first hour. Here is what to do instead.

You open your profile and see a red banner: your Business Profile has been suspended, or restricted. Calls drop, the pin disappears from Maps, and nobody at Google answers the phone.

Take a breath. Most suspensions are triggered automatically by something on the profile that looks like a rule break. They are fixable, but the order in which you do things matters a great deal.

Suspended or restricted?

Google uses two levels, and the message on your profile tells you which.

  • Restricted (or limited) - your profile is still visible to customers, but you cannot edit it or reply to reviews. Annoying, not urgent.
  • Suspended - your profile is hidden from Search and Maps, or shown without your control. This is the one that costs you customers.

Either way, the fix is the same: find the cause, correct it, then appeal once.

The usual causes

Google's guidelines are long, but most suspensions in India come from a short list:

  1. Extra words in the business name. "Sharma Sweets - Best Mithai Shop in Lucknow" is not your name; "Sharma Sweets" is. Locations, keywords and slogans in the name field are the single most common trigger.
  2. An address you do not really operate from. Virtual offices, coworking desks you are never at, a relative's house, or a PO box.
  3. A home address shown publicly for a business that visits customers (plumbers, tutors, AC repair). These should be set up as a service-area business with the address hidden.
  4. More than one profile for the same business at the same place. See our guide on duplicate listings.
  5. A business Google does not list at all, such as an online-only shop with no place customers can visit and no service area.
  6. A burst of big edits - new name, new address and new category on the same day looks like a profile being taken over.
  7. Something suspicious in the reviews, such as a pile of five-star reviews from the same few accounts.

What to do first: fix, do not delete

  • Do not delete the profile. You lose every review, permanently.
  • Do not create a new profile. A second profile for the same business is itself a rule break, and it usually gets suspended too, with the original.
  • Do not keep editing. Every change while under review can restart the review.

Instead, read the profile as a stranger would and correct the thing that breaks the rules: take the keywords out of the name, hide the home address, remove the duplicate. Make that one change, then appeal.

How to appeal

Google's suspension message links to its appeals process (you can also find it in the Business Profile Help Centre by searching "appeal suspended Business Profile"). You will be asked for evidence that the business is real and is where you say it is. Gather it before you start:

  • Photos of the outside of your premises with your permanent signboard clearly showing the name - the same name as on the profile.
  • A photo or video showing the street, so the location can be matched.
  • A document with the business name and address: GST registration certificate, Shop and Establishment licence, Udyam certificate, FSSAI licence for food businesses, or a recent electricity bill or rent agreement in the business name.
  • For a service-area business: a document with the business name, plus photos of branded vehicles, uniforms or tools if you have them.

Make sure the name and address on the documents match the profile exactly. "Sharma Sweets" on the signboard and "Sharma Sweets and Namkeen Pvt Ltd" on the GST certificate is fine to explain in a sentence; a different address is not.

Submit one appeal and wait. Google says it reviews appeals within a few days; sometimes it takes longer. Sending several appeals does not speed it up.

If the appeal is turned down

Read the reason, if one is given. Usually the evidence did not match the profile. Fix the mismatch - the name, the address, the photos - and appeal again with better evidence. If you are certain the profile is correct, the Business Profile support team can be reached through the Support option in your profile.

How not to be suspended again

  • Keep the name exactly as on your signboard.
  • Change one thing at a time, and only when something really changed.
  • One profile per location.
  • Never buy reviews, and never let an agency "boost" your profile with them.
  • Check your profile monthly. Our free profile checker shows how it looks to a customer in a few seconds.
