Local SEO in India, and what actually moves Maps rank
Three results sit above the map when somebody searches for a business near them, and almost all of the demand lands there. Getting into that pack is not a secret and it is not a purchase. It is a short list of signals, most of which you control, and a number you took before you started so you can tell what worked.
The three things Google weighs
Google names them itself, and everything else on this page is a way of feeding one of them.
Proximity
How close you are to the person searching. You cannot change it, which is exactly why one rank number for a whole city tells you very little.
Relevance
How well your listing matches what was typed. Category, services, hours and description do the work here, and the primary category does most of it.
Prominence
How well known you appear to be. Reviews, how recently they arrived, mentions of you elsewhere on the web, and a website that agrees with your listing.
Every signal, and what Sunaam measures
Nothing in this table is a plan we have. Each row is something the product takes a reading on today, with the plan it sits on.
| Signal | Why it matters | What Sunaam measures | Plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Categories | The primary category is the single strongest relevance lever on a listing, and the one most often set once and forgotten. | Category and attribute search against the Google category list, from the profile editor. | All plans |
| Reviews and how recently they arrived | Volume, rating and steady arrival all feed prominence. A profile with forty reviews and nothing since March reads as a business that stopped. | Review ingestion four times a day, drafted replies, QR and WhatsApp requests, response rate in the reputation score. | All plans |
| Photos | Fresh photos give Google and a customer something to judge. An empty profile in a category full of full ones loses the tap. | Photos uploaded and managed on the listing, with a completeness score that says what the profile is still missing. | All plans |
| Posts | Treat these as engagement rather than a direct rank lever. A profile posting an offer looks open for business; one whose last post was two years ago does not. | Event and Offer posts published to the listing from the profile manager, alongside Q&A and place actions. | All plans |
| Keyword rank | You cannot tell whether anything worked without a number that existed before you started. | Tracked phrases with a location, swept weekly on Mondays. 4 phrases on Standard, 15 on Growth, 50 on Business. | Standard and up |
| NAP consistency | Name, address and phone that disagree across directories make Google less certain two listings are the same business. | Citation audit swept Wednesdays, judged field by field: match, mismatch, or not found on the page. | Standard and up |
| Competitors | Local rank is relative. Moving up is somebody else moving down, so the comparison is the measurement. | Competitor benchmarking on review count, rating and citation coverage. | Standard and up |
| Rank across the map, not at one point | Proximity means you rank differently two kilometres away. One rank number for a whole city is an average of things that are not alike. | Geo-grid rank scanning, a 3x3 grid by default, with a visibility score swept Fridays and competitors tracked over time. | Growth and up |
| Your website and Search Console | The listing is not the whole of local search. A site with an old phone number on three pages is contradicting your own profile. | Website audit swept Thursdays naming the wrong value and the pages it is on, Search Console swept Saturdays, GBP performance daily. | Growth and up |
NAP consistency, the Indian version
Name, address and phone, the same everywhere they appear. It sounds like housekeeping and it is one of the cheapest wins available to a local business here.
The directories that count
Google, JustDial and Facebook, plus Zomato and Swiggy for a restaurant or Practo for a clinic. Then Sulekha, IndiaMART, Yellow Pages India and Bing Places as real listings worth having.
The ones that do not
A scraped aggregator adds nothing to prominence and costs you an afternoon. Sunaam's citation registry marks those low value and simply does not recommend them.
Judged field by field
Each listing is scored on name, address and phone separately, as match, mismatch, or not found. A page that never shows an address is reported as such rather than as a red cross.
Your own website counts
An old phone number on three pages of your site contradicts your listing. The website audit names the wrong value, the right one, and the pages carrying it.
Three things that go backwards
- Paying for reviews, or asking only the happy ones. Both are prohibited, both get reviews removed, and a restricted profile ranks nowhere. Ask everyone, and answer the ones who were let down.
- Keywords stuffed into the business name. “Best Dentist in Kolkata” is not the name above your door, and Google requires the real-world one. Competitors can report it, and they do.
- Anyone guaranteeing you position one. Map pack positions are not for sale and no tool controls them. Sunaam measures where you stand and what changed; it does not promise you a rank.
Measured, not guessed at
A rank scan costs real money per run, so Sunaam does not quietly burn it. You press the button on your first scan, and a business that has never scanned sees what the scan will tell it and a Run your first scan button, not a worked example with an invented competitor. A heatmap of a rank nobody measured reads as a measurement however it is labelled.
After that the sweeps run on their own: rank on Mondays, citations on Wednesdays, the website audit on Thursdays, the visibility score on Fridays, Search Console on Saturdays, and profile performance daily. What comes out of it is a prioritised list of what to do next, with the effect of a completed action measured afterwards rather than assumed.
Frequently asked questions
How do I rank higher on Google Maps in India?
Work the three things Google weighs: proximity, relevance and prominence. You cannot move proximity, so set the most accurate primary category, keep the profile complete and current, earn reviews steadily and answer them, add photos, and make sure your name, address and phone match everywhere you are listed. Then measure, because without a starting number you cannot tell which change did anything.
What is local SEO for a small business in India?
It is the work that gets you into the three-result map pack for searches near you, which is where most local demand in India actually lands. That is a Google Business Profile that is complete and answered, a steady flow of genuine reviews, consistent details across the directories Indian customers use, and a website that agrees with all of it.
Which Indian directories are worth listing on?
A handful, not all of them. JustDial is the one Indian customers genuinely search, alongside Google and Facebook, and Zomato and Swiggy for restaurants or Practo for clinics. Sulekha, IndiaMART and Yellow Pages India are real directories worth having. Beyond that, a listing on a scraped aggregator adds nothing and chasing one wastes an afternoon, so Sunaam does not recommend them.
How long does local SEO take to show results?
Longer than anyone selling it wants to say, and it depends on your category, your city and how many businesses are competing within a few kilometres. What is reasonable to expect is that the measurable things move first: profile completeness, review count and response rate, citation consistency. Rank follows those, and Sunaam will not promise you a position.
Does Sunaam guarantee a number one ranking on Google Maps?
No, and treat any tool that does with suspicion. Google does not sell map pack positions and no one can commit to one. What Sunaam does is measure where you stand, track it over time, show what competitors are doing, and give you a prioritised list of what to fix next, with the effect of a completed action measured afterwards rather than assumed.
Can I pay for reviews or only ask my happy customers?
Neither. Offering anything in exchange for a review and asking only the customers you expect to be pleased are both prohibited by Google, and both get reviews removed and the profile restricted. Ask every customer for an honest review, and answer the unhappy ones in public. It is also the only version of this that keeps working.
Start with the number you have today
Connect your Google listing and Sunaam reads where you stand, what is missing from the profile, and which of your details disagree across the web.
