The short answer

About 72% of Indian businesses with an online footprint list a website, but it depends on the kind of business. Banks and finance lead at 87.7%, while gyms and sports centres (45.1%), cinemas and entertainment venues (46%) and restaurants and cafés (48.5%) are all below half. A phone number is far more common: 88% list one, and 96.9% of salons. Among businesses mapped on the ground rather than found online, only 18% list a website.

Which kinds of business have a website?

Banks and finance are the most likely to list a website (87.7%); gyms and sports centres the least (45.1%). That 43-point spread is wider than the one between India's biggest cities (16 points): what a business does says more about whether it has a website than where it is.

What it means for a business without a website

For most local businesses, the page a customer actually sees first is the Google Business Profile in Maps and search, not a website. It carries the phone number, hours, photos and reviews, and it is free. A business without a website is not invisible, provided that profile is claimed, verified and kept up to date.

Read whether a Google Business Profile is free, how to verify one and how to get more Google reviews. If you do want a site, Sunaam's AI website builder makes one from your listing.

How we counted

Every figure is a direct count of the businesses in Sunaam's public directory, built from two open sources: Overture Maps (which draws on Meta, Microsoft, Foursquare and others; places with confidence 0.7 or higher, closed places and non-businesses left out) and OpenStreetMap. A business both sources hold is counted once. It is a count of listed businesses, not a census: a shop no map has recorded is not in it.

Website and phone shares are counted over the Overture listings only. Overture is built from businesses' own web presence (Facebook pages, search listings), so these shares answer “of the businesses with an online footprint, how many list a website?”. Businesses mapped on the ground list far fewer; the State of Local Business report shows both.

A city is the area around its centre: a square about 45 to 50 km across for Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune and Ahmedabad, and about 25 km across for other large cities, so “Delhi” includes parts of Noida, Gurugram and Ghaziabad. Anywhere else, a business belongs to the nearest town of 15,000 or more people (GeoNames).
