Local SEO checklist for Indian restaurants

Twenty things you could do, in the order that actually matters for a restaurant in an Indian city.

Restaurants have it harder than most local businesses: more competitors, more aggregators, and customers deciding in under a minute. Here is the order we would work through.

This week

Claim and verify your Google Business Profile. Everything else depends on it. Step by step here.

Set the most specific accurate category. "Bengali restaurant" or "Biryani restaurant" beats "Restaurant" when it is true.

Fix your hours, including the weekly off and festival closures. A customer who arrives at a closed shutter leaves a one-star review about it.

Add twenty photos. Front of the shop from the street, the dining area, five or six actual dishes as they arrive at the table, the kitchen if it is clean enough to be a selling point. Not stock photos - customers can tell.

Add your menu. Either as a link or through the profile's menu fields.

This month

Get review-asking into your service. A QR code on the bill folder is the lowest-friction thing that works - review QR codes. Or ask on WhatsApp after the visit, which reaches people who have already left

Reply to every review. Including the good ones. Examples for the bad ones.

Post something weekly. A special, a festival menu, a new dish. It keeps the profile from looking abandoned.

Fix your directory listings. JustDial, Zomato, Swiggy, Sulekha. Same name, same address, same number as Google. Why it matters.

Check for duplicates. Restaurants collect them from aggregators more than anyone. How to find them.

Ongoing

Watch where you appear, not whether you appear. Check from several points across your area rather than one search from the till.

Keep photos coming. A dozen new ones a month beats a hundred once.

Respond to questions. People ask about parking, jain food, AC, home delivery. An unanswered question on your profile is a customer choosing somewhere else.

Two things not on this list

Buying reviews. It is against Google's terms, it is detectable, and the downside is losing the profile you spent a year building.

Anyone promising position one. Nobody controls Google's ranking. Be suspicious of certainty.

Doing this without a marketing person

Most of this list is what Sunaam does: profile management, review replies in the language the review was written in, WhatsApp review requests, directory checks and a weekly look at where you appear.

It drafts and prepares. You approve. Nothing reaches Google or a customer without you seeing it first.

More for restaurants specifically.
